How is Y-Club Recognizing Black History Month?

Throughout February, our Y-Club programs have been engaging in Inquiry-Based Black History Month Activities! Take a look at some of the highlights this month.

Y-Club was introduced to Black History Month at its own pace. Y-Club kids were greeted with a layout of bookmarks, Word searches, Color Pages, and Flash Cards. Each of these had kid friendly intros to both historical and current Black figures that allowed us to learn about those who interested us and we felt a connection to. We then engaged in a few different projects based on what we learned:

1. Literacy Based
Y-Club has engaged our kids through a Letter Writing activity. Everyone was asked to think of a contemporary black figure they see in areas such as music, TV/movies, sports, books and more. Once they selected a figure that was meaningful to them, they were able to choose between writing a letter to their selected person or drawing a picture. Some of the chosen figures included: Lebron James, Michelle Obama, the Rock, and Black Panther!

2. Process Art
Y-Club also learned about the Pan-African flag including its history and some of the symbolism behind the flag. We then challenged our Y-Club kids to create their own flag that would represent a prominent black figure they knew. They were asked to consider why they chose certain images and colors to represent that person!

3. Project Learning
We worked together on a project learning project where each Y-Club kid was asked to create a piece of art on a paper plate that represented what they thought of when they considered Black History Month. We then combined all of the plates to create a Y-Club mural of what the month meant to the whole group!

Overall, we had a great time together delving into Black History Month from a mostly contemporary perspective and are ready to jump into Women’s History Month in March!
